796 Miles, End-of-Year Plays and Events, and a Moment of Silence

Dear Member of The Waldorf School of Santa Barbara Community,

As we near the end of the school year, there is much to acknowledge and celebrate.

Last Friday our students logged over 796 miles at our Hike-a-Thon. It was a day of joyous community where the students showed tremendous, humbling dedication to reaching their goals. Thank you to the many parents, staff, faculty, and sponsors who made this day a success. This event not only supports our school but gives us a chance to support a local non-profit, Santa Barbara Bee Guild.

Please note that donations are due Friday, May 30th. They can be turned into the office or conveyed online (Hike-a-Thon, May 16, 2025).

WSSB students logged 796 miles at our Hike-a-Thon!

Our First Grade and our Third/Fourth Grade classes presented their plays this week to families, friends, and students.

First Grade presented “Clump-a-Dump and Snickle-Snack”; and Third/Fourth Grade presented “Thor Triumphant.”

Congratulations to the students for all their hard work — the memorization of lines; the making of props; the acting, singing, and dancing; and the backstage work.

And thank you, teachers, for your thorough direction!

Ms. Witcher’s Third/Fourth Grade performed their wonderful play, “Thor Triumphant,” a culmination of their studies of Norse Mythology.

Ms. Lowenberg’s First Grade performed the delight-filled, “Clump-a-Dump and Snickle-Snack.”

As many of you know, three Dos Pueblos High School students—18-year-old Jake Curtis, 17-year-old Michael Ochsner, and 15-year-old Alexander Wood—died Sunday night in a multi-car crash on Highway 1.

The boys had just completed junior lifeguard training at Jalama Beach and were driving home. Three minutes before the crash Alexander called his brother Owen to see if he wanted anything from In-N-Out. Owen, according to a Noozhawk article, requested a triple-triple: three patties, three slices of cheese. This request apparently prompted laughter among the three boys.

The agony of the boys’ parents and siblings is disturbing to contemplate. Such a loss illuminates the greatest fear of all parents; and merely to ponder such a loss can jar one’s faith in life.

WSSB faculty/staff set aside time in this week’s meeting to light a candle, read a poem, and be still in honor of the boys and their families and to also acknowledge Lompoc physician Hafez Nasr and his passenger Saghar Golpayegani as they were involved in the crash, too, and suffered major injuries. May Dr. Nasr and Ms. Golpayegani heal wholly and soon.

In the midst of all this, we might find some refuge in something Dos Pueblos senior Lucas Nora said in response to the devastation. “There’s no reason to not show love,” Nora said. “Life’s too short for anything else.”
