Education with a Vision

Dear Members of The Waldorf School of Santa Barbara Community,

Waldorf education is not education for education's sake, learning for learning's sake. Education, each of us knows, is no guarantee of character, wisdom, humanity; of a profound sort of intelligence. Education, we know, is not inherently positive.

Founder of Waldorf schools, Rudolf Steiner wrote: "All knowledge pursued merely for the enrichment of personal learning and the accumulation of personal treasure leads you away from the path; but all knowledge pursued for growth of human ennoblement...brings you a step forward. "

In other words, Waldorf education is not merely about individual growth, self-realization, success. Its ultimate concern is the commonweal, the sacred hoop, this beautiful life and earth we together share. It is education rooted in an edifying and healing vision.

A vision without a task is but a dream. A task without a vision is drudgery. A vision with a task is the joy of the world.

On a less philosophical -- but still joyous -- note, today the Early Childhood and Third Grade made pear cider with an old-fashioned ciderpress! Praise Be!
