Janet Wood was born and raised in Santa Barbara, graduating from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a B.A. in Mathematics and a California Single-Subject Teaching credential. After teaching in Santa Barbara for a few years, she moved to Japan to teach mathematics to both middle and high school students at an international school in Tokyo. With her daughters in the local elementary school, many opportunities arose for her to share our American culture through songs, games, food, drama and English lessons. In addition, she enjoyed studying Ikebana, practicing as a member of a Taiko drum group and traveling throughout Japan and Southeast Asia.

In 2014, she returned to Santa Barbara and joined our staff as a math teacher for grades 5 – 8. She wants to encourage her students to develop competence and confidence in the skills they are learning as well as guide them towards becoming caring, educated individuals with a growing awareness, tolerance and concern for the people and the world around them. She hopes to share her experiences of living and working overseas with our students and has discovered a wonderful opportunity to do this with the children in our early childhood Summergarten program. Ms. Wood is pleased to have found a position within the warm and welcoming community here at the Waldorf School.
